Flemish etching Scene of chamois hunting by Philipp GALLE (Haarlem 1537 – Antwerp 1612) from the work Venationes Ferarum, Avium, Piscium. Original burin engraving from a subject by Jan van der Straet born in Bruges in 1523 and died in Florence in 1605, Italianised and known as Giovanni Stradano, preparatory drawing with a venatorial subject for the tapestries of Cosimo de’ Medici’s villa at Poggio a Caiano.
Printed on a portion of thin virgin paper bearing a watermark in accordance with the typical Northern European papermaking of the first half of the 17th century, complete with the imprint of the plate and with margins varying from one to two centimetres in size, with several small defects at the edges but overall in good condition.T Scene full of characters and surrounded by bucolic backgrounds, men, animals, fantasy and reality at the same time. Caption in Latin at the bottom.
Giovanni Stradano, painter and draughtsman of Flemish origin, trained artistically first in his father’s workshop and then in Antwerp under the painter Pieter Aertsen. He travelled extensively in Europe, lived in Venice, Florence, Rome, Naples and finally Florence again, the city in which he died.
