16th Century Old Masters Nicolo Cercignani the Transfiguration after Raphael
A late 16th century oil on copper painting by Nicolò Cercignani, an Italian Old Masters artist of the late-Renaissance or Mannerist period, depicting the Raphaelesque transfiguration.
Nicolò Cercignani, sometimes called Niccolo Circignani, known as Pomarancio (Pomarance 1517 ca – 1597 Città della Pieve) was together with Ricciarelli one of the main protagonists of Mannerist painting developed in Tuscany in the 16th century.
This intense pathos work by Cercignani shows two biblical events. On top the transfiguration of Christ. At the bottom is the story of a young boy possessed by a demon. Cercignani characters are not so dramatic than those of the original painting by Raphael.
The religious work is set in a modern giltwood frame and comes from a Milanese private collection.
This Italian Old Masters painting is in good age related condition, the copper plate size is unusually large and is slightly wavy on the upper left side. UV Wood black light shows very minor painting retouched dots, compatible with the 16th century.
65 x 49,7 cm is the copper plate size only, unframed.
Period: 1500
