Christ Child as Salvator Mundi 18th Century Italian oil on Canvas Painting
An antique 18th century Italian painting depiting the figure of the infant Christ as Salvator Mundi, in a cloudy sky, loosely draped, holding the celestial globe in His left hand and a crucifix in the right hand.
With His right foot he subdues the head of a winged dragon that seems to have a resigned look.
The painting represents the victory of Faith over evil, a matter underlined by the Light illuminating Christ Child contrasting the darkness of the background.
The painting’s canvas has been professionally relined and shows old restorations, consistent with age and use. Later canvas cleaning and revarnishing improve the good age related condition of this Italian artwork, dating back to back to mid-18th century.
Framed with an original linear silver-leaf wooden frame of the same period.
Period: 1700
