French Majolica Violin Rouen 1800s. This polychrome majolica violin with stanniferous glaze is fully decorated in shades of ochre and blue with floral motifs, flower vases, cornucopias and grids, arabesque motif in shades of green. The same decoration also adorns the edges of the instrument, containing shaped tableaus with polychrome flowers. The back of this musical pottery bears other decorations with flowers and racemes as well as the inscription of the French manufactory, bottom left, 777 Rouen. This 19th century instrument shows a side pocket and two holes for hanging on the wall by a rope, missing. It is not intended to produce sound, it represents a rare and precious genre of decorative arts.
In good condition apart from minimal enamel loss as visible in the gallery photos. Comes from a private collection.
The most valuable Delft stanniferous enamel violin is in the Ceramic Museum in Rouen, followed by one from the Loudon collection in La Haye, one from the Evenopoel collection in Brussels and one from the Museum of the National Conservatory of Music in Paris.
